In Iran, the 27-year-old champion of the country in Greco-Roman wrestling Navid Afkari was executed, as Sport24 news agency reports.
He was arrested for participating in anti-government protests in 2018. He was charged with 20 crimes.
Afkari was convicted of participating in illegal gatherings, gatherings and conspiracy to commit crimes against national security, insulting the country's top leadership, and stabbing a water company worker to death during the riots.
The court sentenced Afkari to the gallows with a preliminary infliction of 74 lashes.
The athlete turned to the World Human Rights Agency for help. UFC head Dana White and US President Donald Trump spoke in support of him. They appealed to the Iranian authorities with a request to cancel the cruel punishment of Afkari.
It should be noted that along with Afkari, two more of his brothers, Wahid and Zabib, were convicted. They will spend behind bars: one - 54 years, the other - 27 years.
