Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the person of the year according to the American Time magazine readers, his candidacy was supported by 18% of the online vote on the website of the edition.

Modi beat other famous politicians and figures by almost 12%, including the current president of the US and US President-elect Barack Obama and Donald Trump as well as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. 7% of respondents voted for them. Modi also left Mark Zuckerberg and Hillary Clinton behind.

Modi headed the Government of India in May 2014 after his party "Bharatiya Janata Party" won the elections by promising to implement a comprehensive program of reforms.

Modi is a staunch vegetarian. The politician also writes poetry in Gujarati and is an active user of social networks.

In 2014, the American magazine readers also voted for Modi as man of the year.

Time magazine defines a "person of the year" every year since 1927. Until 1950 only specific individuals became the laureates, but later abstract characters started to receive the title.
