India tightens quarantine restrictions against the background of a surge in the incidence of Covid-19, DW reports.

For example, in New Delhi and Bangalore, a curfew from 22:00 was imposed. Bars and restaurants should work at 50% occupancy. In Mumbai, public gatherings of more than four people were banned from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am and wedding ceremonies were limited to 50 guests.

In addition, the country has launched a vaccination campaign for adolescents aged 15 to 18 years. A large number of schools and other educational institutions have been converted into vaccination centers. Adolescents are vaccinated with the locally produced Covaxin vaccine, the only vaccine approved for emergency use in this age group.

As of the afternoon, more than 450,000 teenagers have received their first vaccinations. In total, India has the largest number of adolescents in the world - about 253 million. Of these, 74 million belong to the age group of 15-18 years.

From the next week, the country will introduce booster vaccinations for doctors and people over 60 with comorbidities.

A total of 33,750 new cases have been registered in the country over the past 24 hours. The total number of officially recorded cases of omicron in India is 1,700.
