Healthcare Ministry warns about possible diphtheria outbreak in Ukraine

The outbreaks of diphtheria and tetanus are possible in Ukraine. Fedir Lapy, the expert of the Healthcare ministry for infective diseases, children’s infective diseases and parasitology claimed this at the briefing as 112.ua reported.

‘We should not allow the outbreak of diphtheria. At the moment, we have enough doses of vaccine against diphtheria and tetanus in Ukraine. We can provide the immunity to every adult for the first time during the last years. Every adult should be re-vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus every ten years’, he said.

The expert recommended the Ukrainian to take care of the presence of the vaccination beforehand.

‘Let’s do it on the way to not make people create the queues if we hypothetically will have the outbreak of diphtheria. They should come to the doctor and ask about the necessity to be re-vaccinated, to be- re-vaccinated in the case of need to avoid this outbreak in Ukraine’, he added.

As we reported Ulana Suprun, the acting Healthcare Ministry claimed that 1.285 people have been infected with measles in Ukraine since the beginning of 2018. Most of the instances are recorded in Ivano-Frankivsk, Chernivtsi, Zakarpattia, Odesa region and Kyiv regions. Eight people deceased, which is already twice more than the previous year's figure.
