According to the witnesses, the attackers were armed with knives and clubs. It is noted that the brutal beating began after a minor dispute between one of the local Ukrainians and a Jew.
"The Ukrainian involved in the dispute called on his anti-Semitic friends to come and beat the Jews," Jew who spent Shabbos in Uman said.
