The local residents of Drohobych, Lviv region, came to the gathering due to a garbage collapse. The residents of Bronytsia village blocked the Drohobych landfill demanding to close it, and they do not allow the equipment to enter it. As a result, there is one more problem as the garbage is now transported to other regions and the locals should pay more for the public service.
According to the locals, the prices increased almost thrice from $0.34 to $0.93.
The local authorities said that the landfill was blocked illegally and it was recognized by two court decision. Particularly, the landfill has all permissive acts and passport for its functioning. However, it is still blocked.
"We were the first to bring the landfill into conformity with the ecological norms. When we started video-monitoring and fenced the landfill, then the problem occurred. And we understand why. A lot of Romani people and others earned money here, and, of course, they lost that profit now," Drohobych Mayor Taras Kuchma said.
"There are the proper decisions of the court. It made a decision to unblock it. Unfortunately, the attempts to do it are not successful. The residents of the village block the work of the equipment that tries to enter the landfill, and the problem escalates," Andry Belous, the First Deputy Head of Lviv Regional Council said.
The local authorities urge the law enforcement bodies to execute the court's decision and interfere with blocking of the Drohobych landfill.
The town of Suhodil, Luhansk region, has been suffering from environment issues for a while now.
