Part of the park is being built up, so dozens of rare, exotic and even Red List trees are cut and dug up. Foros Park for Ukraine is a monument and nature conservation area of national importance. It is almost 190 years old. Construction work in the park began a year ago in the fall. Local residents have been trying all these months to resist deforestation and development. This week the situation reached its climax: according to activists, they began to be intimidated by the police.
Foros Park has more than 200 species of trees and shrubs from different parts of the world, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of them have already been felled or cut down to bare trunks, some are still alive, but already with destroyed or damaged roots - all for the sake of construction.
In the fall, the Foros citizens began to notice a lot of heavy equipment in the park. Later, numbers appeared on the trees. The locals did not know what and who was building. No public hearings were held on this matter. Since October the Foros citizens have been trying to get answers. They were told that everything is being done within the framework of the reconstruction of the health resort buildings. Since 2016, the Foros sanatorium has been owned by the Federation of Trade Unions of Tatarstan. The construction on the territory of the park is carried out by the Tatinvestgrazhdanproekt enterprise. The stated goal is the construction of a children's health complex called "Ak Bars".
The Ministry of Ecology of Crimea, controlled by Russia, said that the construction was legal, the destruction of 37 plantings was agreed, and later there will be a so-called compensation planting. According to the documents, it is possible to build up the territory of the park by 20%.
Local residents actively oppose construction and massive tree felling. The most active residents of Foros talk about pressure on them, special attention from the police.
