Former King of Spain Juan Carlos moved to the United Arab Emirates after announcing he was leaving his home country in connection with a corruption investigation, as the BBC agency reported.
A photograph published by the Spanish media group NIUS shows the former monarch was disembarking from a plane at Abu Dhabi airport. Juan Carlos now occupies an entire floor of the five-star Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi. It is known that the former king was close to the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.
Earlier, former Spanish king Juan Carlos, who was under investigation on corruption charges, was leaving the country. He explained his decision to leave the country by his unwillingness to complicate the role of his son.
His announcement of his departure caused huge controversy in Spain about the expediency of the monarchy and about where the former king intends to move.
Local media said he had traveled to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean or neighboring Portugal.
The Spanish royal family and government have so far declined to comment on the former monarch's whereabouts.
