A torchlight procession took place in Sloviantsk, the town in Donetsk region that saw the occupation by Russia-backed militants in spring 2014 and was released in summer that year. The procession was timed to the Day of the National Unity, celebrated nation-wide on January 22.
The event, which actually took place for the first time in the entire history of the town, was organized by local patriotic organizations and Azov, the regiment of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry. Activists from other towns of Donetsk region joined the manifestation.
The procession peacefully marched across the town and finished near the monument to famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko.
The activists shouted pro-Ukrainian slogans, urging Ukrainians to unite in the struggle for national unity and territorial integrity. Some of them said that the military actions in Donbas made Ukrainians stand united.
