The first case of infection with a new Delta Plus coronavirus strain found in Russia. RBC reports citing the Deputy Director for Research at the Smorodintsev Research Institute of Influenza Darina Danilenko.
"The case is unique and, most likely, imported," the expert said.
Isolated cases of infection with this strain have also been reported in the United States, Great Britain, and other countries.
"Yes, we know that he has a mutation in the 417th position of the S-protein. But such a mutation is in the Brazilian version and in the version with surfactants. As for the clinical picture in patients with the Delta Plus variant, there is no reason to say that it is more dangerous or deadly," Danilenko added.
Delta Plus strain is a variant of the Indian Delta strain. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes that the Indian strain is twice as contagious as the original Wuhan variant. According to preliminary data, it also increases the risk of severe disease, the organization said.
A variation of Delta Plus has an even higher rate of spread, the ability to more strongly affect lung cells, warned the Indian research center INSACOG. It was also assumed that the new strain will be able to overcome the protection created by antibodies.
As it was reported, on June 23, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov stated that the newest Indian strain of coronavirus Delta was recorded in Ukraine.
