Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović-Burić expressed her condolences about the tragedy that occurred in the nursing home in Kharkiv. Her press secretary Daniel Holtgen released the statement on Twitter.
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of lives in today’s tragic fire in the elderly home in Kharkiv. On behalf of the Council of Europe, I offer sincere condolences to the families of victims and to the people of Ukraine, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured", Pejcinovic-Buric said as quoted.
The official wished the injured survivors speedy recovery.
A two-story nursing house caught fire in Kharkiv on January 21, killing 15 people. Investigators of the State Bureau of Investigations of Ukraine investigate the case, assuming that workers of the State Emergency Service allowed the neglect of duty, which eventually led to the tragedy. President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered the government to create the investigation committee; he will personally visit the site of the tragedy on Friday.
Earlier, the Prosecutor General's Office claimed that the fire could be caused by careless use of electric-heating devices.
The city hall announced that January 22 will be the day of mourning in Kharkiv.
