Facebook users actively support the country's main information channel 112 Ukraine, after National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting stripped of its digital broadcast licenses. An unprecedented decision was made on September 26.

In this regard, the TV channel’s fans are actively adding photo frames with inscriptions “I support 112 Ukraine,” “Let’s save freedom of speech”, “No to closing TV channels” to their Facebook photos.

This is not the first time that 112 Ukraine has been inconvenient for the authorities. We have been fighting for our right to be on the air from the very beginning, each government has tried to stop our work. The actions of National Council are illegal. The powers of some National Council members expired since July 2019 that the Verkhovna Rada de facto recognized, and by taking any decisions they exceed their authority, and the National Council itself is not competent. We perceive the National Council’s decision as an illegal decision of an illegitimate authority. Nevertheless, 112 Ukraine channel, 112.ua and 112.international websites will continue their work. We will not allow the decision of National Council to deprive the Ukrainians of objective information," the channel’s official response to the decision says.

Earlier we reported that National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) treated decision of the National TV and Radio Council to deprive 112 Ukraine TV channel of the license for the digital broadcasting as the attempt to restrict the freedom of speech in Ukraine and impose censorship as Union’s Head Serhiy Tomilenko reported on Facebook.

The NUJU expressed concern over such decision of the council and noted that it jeopardized the hundreds of workplaces of the journalists and employees of the TV channel.

“The position of the National Council toward 112 is biased because a number of Ukrainian channels was created by the consolidation of regional licenses. For example, 5 Channel consisted of NBM regional network and Ekspress-inform. I do not understand why the similar decision is not allowed for 112, which is asking for it since 2018,” Tomilenko wrote.

The NUJU treats the current decision of the National Council as an attempt to restrict the freedom of speech in Ukraine and impose censorship.

“Because 112 TV channel is the leader of news broadcasting. It criticizes authority often and provides the possibility to the critics of the authority to deliver their position. Too bad that in modern Ukraine TV channels are deprived of the license and large audience of access to mass media it likes,” the message said.
