An explosion occurred at a Shiite mosque in the Afghan province of Kunduz on Friday, October 8, during the prayer, Aamaj New reports.

An explosion at a Shiite mosque has reportedly killed about 100 people, the exact number of victims is unknown. At the same time, other local media claim 30 dead and 70 wounded people.

The bomber struck at about 1:30 p.m. local time with a large crowd attending Friday prayers. According to preliminary data, the suicide bomber detonated an explosive device inside a religious building.

The blast was also confirmed by representative of the radical Taliban movement and Deputy Ministry of Information and Culture in the interim Afghan government Zabiullah Mujahid.

"An explosion erupted in the mosque of our Shiite compatriots in Kunduz province this afternoon, killing and injuring others. A specialized detachment of our fighters arrived at the scene and began an investigation into what happened," he wrote.

As it was reported earlier, two powerful explosions struck the perimeter of the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul on August 30. The bombings came hours after Western governments warned their citizens to stay away from the airport due to the threat of terrorist attacks. Among those killed were 13 US military personnel and many civilian Afghans.
