Council of Europe concerned about attack increase on public activists in Ukraine

The Council of Europe concerned about the increase in attacks on representatives of civil society in Ukraine. The Representative of the Council of Europe Daniel Holtgen claimed this, Ukrinform reports.

‘We share the concern regarding the increase in attacks on representatives of civil society in Ukraine. An active civil society is a significant factor for democracy and human rights defenders. Consequently, activists have to be protected. We noted the intention of the Ukrainian leadership, to conduct a full investigation, expressed by President Poroshenko,’ the Council of Europe stressed.

As it was reported earlier, on November 4, it became known that Kateryna Handziuk, Adviser of Kherson's Mayor, died aged 34. She was doused with sulphuric acid in July this year. According to preliminary information, the death was caused by thrombus detachment.

Later, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko confirmed the information, expressed his condolences in accordance with the death of the adviser. He required the law enforcement bodies to do everything possible to find the murderers and punish them.
