On June 10, the European Union passed Ukraine into service a new permanent protective shelter, built on the site of Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. This was reported by the EU office in Ukraine on Facebook page, as uaprom writes.
The permanent safe confinement was passed to the Ukrainian CNPP for exploitation and from this time onward Ukraine is responsible for service of the construction and dismantling of the first shelter, built right after the accident.
“EU welcomes the official transfer of the permanent shelter to the Ukrainian government – new safe confinement, which was built on the site of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster in 1986. This biggest transportable steel construction in the world is the result of 20 years of planning and building, as well as huge efforts of Ukraine and international society,” the post stated.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky visited the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone on July 10 and reported on his Twitter page about signing the decree, which will be the start of the transformation of the Exclusion Zone into new Ukraine’s growing-point.
Zelensky added that the “green corridor” for the tourists would be created and the factors for corruption would be canceled. The President emphasized there would not be any “prohibitions to film videos and other stupid things.”
“Let’s finally stop scaring people and visitors away and start to transform the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone into the scientific and future touristic magnet. Let’s make it the land of freedom which will become one of the Ukrainian symbols without corruptions and absurd prohibitions, but with investment and the future,” the President said.
It stands to mention, that the new safe shelter fully covered the first shelter built above the 4-th Сhornobyl power-generating unit in 1986. The construction is designed to restrict radiation for the closest 100 years. The new isolating structure 1.5 billion euros worth was being built for 9 years: it has become the biggest aboveground steel construction in the world. It is 165 m in length, 260 m in width and 110 m in height. More than 2000 t of high-quality metal sheet of MC Shakhtar production (included into Metinvest group) was used for its construction.
