The export of AstraZeneca vaccine to Australia is banned by the EU and the Italian government as DW reported.

The ban is caused by the fail of AstraZeneca manufacturer to provide the sufficient amount of doses to the EU countries.

It is specified that it is the first time that the EU used the export control mechanism to ensure that the vaccine producers respect their contracts.

AstraZeneca requested the government of Italy to authorize the export of 250,000 doses, but Italy refused the request and it was backed by the European Commission.

The EU launched an export control system in late January amid shortages of vaccine doses in the early stages of its vaccination campaign.

As we reported, amid the slow launch of Covid-19 vaccines in the EU, Austria and Denmark will join Israel to produce vaccines against mutations of the coronavirus.
