The epicenter of the global pandemic of the coronavirus Covid-19 has moved to South America six months after it appeared on the other side of the world in Wuhan, China. Executive Director of the WHO emergency program Mike Ryan stated this at a briefing in Geneva, CNBC reports.
"We have seen many countries in South America with a growing number of cases, and obviously there is a problem in many of these countries, but Brazil is certainly the most affected at this stage. In a sense, South America has become the new epicenter of the disease," Ryan noted.
According to him, in the Brazilian region of the tropical jungle of the Amazon, the highest level of spread of the disease was recorded - about 490 infected for every 100,000 of the population.
According to the latest WHO daily report on the situation with coronavirus, in Brazil the number of Covid-19 patients is approaching 300,000 people, while 19,000 people died from this dangerous ailment.
As we reported before, in Ukraine, as of the morning of May 23, the number of Covid-19 coronavirus infected increased to 20,580 (+432 per day).
