Environmentalists expect negative impact of the Winter Olympics on the environment in the Carpathian mountains in Ukraine. 55 European, Asian and American environmental organizations demand that the International Olympic Committee refuse from the idea to hold these Games in Ukraine. The respective statement was handed over to the IOC Chairman, reports DW.

"Ukraine uses talks about potential hosting of the Winter Olympics to justify the extremely destructive projects related to oligarchs, which pose considerable risks of destruction of natural environment and development of corruption", reads the letter.

The activists are confident that these projects do not meet the principles of sustainable development and the ideas of Olympic Games.

Besides, the letter says that the construction of resort areas in Svidovets and Borzhava mountainous are does not rely on current infrastructure and communities; such works in a fragile mountaineous environmental system are considered a threat to it.

As is known, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine is going to bid for Winter Olympic Games in 2028 or 2030.
