Elon Musk believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be the cause of a third world war, according to CNBC.

“China, Russia, soon all countries w strong computer science. Competition for AI superiority at national level most likely cause of WW3 imo (in my opinion)," Musk wrote on Twitter.

According to the media, Musk’s comment was in response to Vladimir Putin’s remark that the first global leader in AI would "become the ruler of the world”. Putin said the development of AI raises both "colossal opportunities" and "threats that are difficult to predict."

At the moment, the United States are believed to be leading in the AI development, with companies like Google and Microsoft investing lots of money into the research. But there is information that China could be catching up with the US.

Moreover, Elon Musk thinks that AI could pose a greater threat than North Korea, as AI could start a war of its own accord, given that it considers it “the most probable path to victory”.
