Beginning today, Ukrainian teachers will be making at least thrice the nationwide minimum wage. Such are the provisions of the law On Education which are effective from 1 January 2018.
For instance, a teacher with low qualification will make three times the nationwide minimum wage. An academic will receive a further increase of 25%. Also, academics will be able to improve their skills not only at educational institutions that hold appropriate licenses, but also at “other educational establishments, as well as other individuals or corporations”. In such case, the results of such training must be approved by a faculty meeting’s decision.
As reported previously, the law On Education came into force on 28 September 2017. The law introduces 12-year school education and increases wages for teachers and academics.
The law’s provisions regarding the language of teaching for national minorities and indigenous communities of Ukraine. The law does not provide for the existence of schools with instruction in their native languages. The law only enables Ukrainian-language schools to form separate classes, where the language of instruction is the native language of such national minorities, along with Ukrainian.
The state guarantees the opportunity to study a language of a national minority through schools or cultural societies. At universities, students will be able to study languages of national minorities as a separate discipline.
However, those provisions will not apply to school students of national minority backgrounds who began studying prior to 1 September 2018. They will be able to continue studying accordingly to previous rules until 1 September 2020. After that, they will have more of their classes taught in Ukrainian.
