German environmental organizations Naturschutzbund Deutschland (Nabu) and Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) got from the authorities the temporary stop of the Nord Stream 2 construction in the territorial waters of Germany as Spiegel reported.

The proper letters with the objection to the construction were sent by the ecologists to the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH) after that body allowed the renewal of works on laying the gas pipeline.

“The contradictions have suspense effect – the permission acting in the waters of Germany loses its power temporarily,” the message said.

The environmental associations criticize Nord Stream 2 project as their arguments for the protection of nature and climate were not taken into consideration.

Particularly, the construction of the gas pipeline was allowed during the particularly sensitive period of birds resting.

For reasons of nature protection, between autumn and summer, the works are usually stopped. For the protection of seabirds, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany determines the maximum duration of the construction phase in 30 days with 14-day breaks from January until May.

However, this time, the authorities made a decision that the lying of the pipe has restricted or secondary influence on birds that are nesting in this region and their protection will not suffer.

Previously, due to the threat of U.S. sanctions, the construction of Nord Stream 2 was significantly delayed.

The new permission is necessary as Swiss-Dutch Allseas Company revoked its special pipe-laying vessels at the end of 2019 under the pressure of the U.S. Russia made a decision to count on its own capacities. Akademik Cherskiy vessel was involved in the works. Besides, Fortuna barge is involved.

However, at the beginning of October, the Danish Energy Agency granted a permit to operate a section of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, subject to a number of conditions ensuring the safe operation of the pipelines.

Earlier, Nord Stream 2 AG Company finished the works on the construction of the part of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the exclusive economic zone of Germany.
