The Ukrainian police initiated the criminal proceeding over the fact of the incident that took place in Uman earlier today. The attack on Jewish pilgrims was qualified as ‘hooliganism’, the police’s press service says.
The Embassy of Israel in Ukraine expressed grief because of the desecration of the Jewish shrine in Uman and decisively condemned the incident. ‘The law enforcers lead the investigation into it. The Ukrainian side will resort to every necessary measure so that the guilty are punished. The Embassy condemns any manifestations of anti-Semitism, xenophobia and other forms of intolerance within the Ukrainian society,’ reads the statement.
As 112 International reported with reference to Ynetnews portal, earlier today, the group of anti-Semitic activists attacked Jewish worshippers who came to the grave of their spiritual leader Rabbi Nachman. They were sprayed with tear gas, and one of the thugs tossed a pig’s head with swastika cut on it, spilling a lot of fake blood on the floor. The Israeli media add that the attackers shouted anti-Semitic slogans.
No one was hurt in the incident. The aggressors escaped before the police arrived.
Thousands of Hassidic pilgrims annually come to Uman, Cherkasy region, central Ukraine. Thus, they pay tribute to their spiritual leader Rabbi Nachman, who was buried there. His grave is considered one of the most respected places for Hassidic pilgrims.
