"The Delta variant will have the upper hand over the summer, it's more a matter of weeks than months," Spahn told a news conference.
Spahn added that the variant currently made up more than 15% of coronavirus cases reported in Germany. He also stated that the spread of the variant would depend on how many people get vaccinated and on infection incidence.
The epidemiological situation has recently improved in Germany. Last day, 475 new cases of infection and 65 deaths were detected in the country.
As a reminder, a variant of the coronavirus, named Delta, was discovered in India in October last year. Since then, it has spread around the world, it is also found in Ukraine. The largest number of cases is reported in the United Kingdom, where the strain has already been identified more than 111 thousand times. Only 2 cases were officially recorded in Ukraine. Among the new symptoms are a runny nose, headache, and sore throat.
On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, about 180 million people have been infected and about 3.9 million have died in the world. 2.2 million people have been infected in Ukraine. 52,234 cases have been fatal.
