Covishield halves Covid-19 vaccine production, CEO Adar Poonawalla stated, BBC reports.

"We have no other orders at hand. So I am going to be reducing the production by at least 50% to begin with on a monthly basis until orders again pick up either in India and the world," the message reads.

It is noted that the reduction of Covishield (local version of AstraZeneca) production is expected until the signing of a new agreements with the Indian government or with any other country. In addition, Poonawalla said that very few orders come from the Covax platform, which supplies vaccines to poorer countries.

In India, about 85% of citizens received a single dose of the vaccine. However, tens of millions of people still need to receive a second dose.

"Also India has vaccinated about 83 million of the roughly 130 million adults above 60 years so far. We still have a gap in terms of vaccine coverage among our most vulnerable people."

As it was reported, more than 1 million expired doses of AstraZeneca in Ukraine were found to have an expiration date on November 30, 2021. They will be removed in December.
