The World Health Organization’s (WHO) spokesperson Christian Lindmeier has stated that makers of Covid-19 vaccines should gear up for the “likelihood” of needing to adjust their products to protect against the Omicron variant. It is reported by The Guardian.

“It is very recommendable that vaccine manufacturers already start planning ahead and plan for the likelihood for having to adjust the existing vaccine. That’s good not just to wait until the final alarm bell rings,” he said during a UN briefing in Geneva.

According to him, the agency is still studying the transmissibility and severity of the new variant, first reported in Southern Africa.

At the same time, BioNTech believes that vaccines should continue to provide protection against serious diseases, despite mutations.

According to the CEO of a German pharmaceutical company, the new variant of Covid-19 could infect vaccinated people. However, the vaccine will continue to protect against severe illness.

Meanwhile, during 2022-2023, Ukraine will receive another 50 million doses of Comirnaty vaccine, the press service of the Ministry of Healthcare reports.

Such a supply became possible after Ukraine increased its capacity to store vaccines in ultra-low temperatures.
