Coronavirus in Ukraine: first infection case registered

Ukraine has a confirmed case of COVID-19 or coronavirus. Viktor Lyashko, Ukraine's Deputy Health Minister and Country’s Chief Medical Sanitation Officer, reported that during the briefing of Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers.

The case spotted in the Chernivtsi region. A man returned to Ukraine from Italy and entered Ukraine through the border with Romania.

“On February 26, a man was returning via Romanian airport. A temperature screening at Romanian airport showed that the man’s temperature was normal. After that, he returned to the Chernivtsi region through the state border entry point to Ukraine,” Viktor Lyashko said.

According to him, the man has additionally his temperature checked, a questionnaire was taken, and a self-isolation memo was also handled to him since he traveled to countries where coronavirus cases were reported.

“The family of a man and a woman were traveling. They isolated themselves, and literally, in 2 days after self-isolation, the man had symptoms that сould prove coronavirus infection. He’s according to a medical procedure, approved by the government, he turned for consultation of a family doctor," the Ministry of Health noted.

After that, the man received consultation from the family doctor and continued following medical advice before February 29, when certain symptoms appeared at night that needed additional consultation in the infectious diseases hospital. He called an ambulance, a special team arrived, which was set up specifically for visiting and transporting patients with suspected coronavirus infection.

Then the patient was taken to a specific hospital facility, defined by the Chernivtsi region health department. During the medical examination, biological samples were taken for research.

"First, on Sunday, March 1, quick tests for influenza A and B were performed, after which they were tested for influenza using the polymerase chain reaction method and samples were taken and delivered to the virology laboratory at the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health," Lyashko added.

“Yesterday I said that we have 4 cases with suspicion, today one case is confirmed. All materials and samples were additionally transferred to the WHO virological laboratory. The case was registered in Ukraine, and we began working with the exposed persons - those who contacted the infected patient. There are few of them, local epidemiologists established each of them, and now they do work with exposed persons. All others are in a regime of self-isolation," the Deputy Health Minister summed up.

Lyashko also added that no extreme or emergency events occurred in connection with the appearance of coronavirus in Ukraine.

We are working normally. According to our algorithms, we are in the phase of the epidemic, when we report single cases of imported coronavirus infection. We have worked out a clear algorithm for our future actions - what to do when the virus carry-over takes place inside the country and when is spread outside a certain administrative territory, district, city, region. Clear algorithms are provided by the government, and we will comply with them," he added.

As we reported earlier, as of today, March 3, the number of infected with the new type of coronavirus COVID-19 is 90,937 people, 3,117 of them died in the world.

It was also reported earlier, people with coronavirus in Ukraine will be treated free of charge - if they are treated in municipal and state medical institutions.
