The Synodus of Ecumenical Patriarchate prepared the preliminary draft project of the statute of the future Ukrainian Church. This is mentioned in the communique of the Synodus released on Thursday.
'In the view of the previously made decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, expecting the Patriarchic and Synodal Tomos, the Holiest Synodus compiled the Constitutional Charter of the Ukrainian Church', the document reads.
After the approval of the document, the Ukrainian clergy has to convene for the Unification Council and elect their leader.
President Poroshenko stated that Bartholomew, the Ecumenical Patriarch will announce the date of the Unification Council in the near time. 'A historical decision on creation of the autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox church was made. The text of the Tomos on the independent Ukrainian church is approved', the head of the state said.
As it was reported earlier, the Ecumenical Patriarchate decided to grant the autocephaly for Ukraine's Orthodox Church. The respective document appeared on the official website of the Patriarchate. This outraged the Russian Orthodox Church, which already promised 'a tough and decisive response.'
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate struggled for the autocephaly since the country gained independence in 1991. For his firm stance in this regard, Patriarch Filaret, the current leader of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate was stripped of his orders in 1992, as the Russian Orthodox Church imposed the anathema on him. Most recently, the Ecumenical Patriarchate lifted it from him. This decision, and the subsequent decision to grant Ukraine Tomos outraged the Russian Orthodox Church, which already promised 'a tough and decisive response.'
