Turkey has opened its border with the EU, Greece is trying to prevent refugees from entering its territory, as DW reports.

On the whole, the Greek side prevented 4,000 illegal migrants from crossing the border. Greece representative Stelios Petsas said this after a crisis meeting of the government.

About 500 people were in the buffer zone between the two borders at the Kastanis checkpoint. According to the Greek government, another 3,000 migrants gathered from the Turkish side near the checkpoint. Greek law enforcement officers detained 66 people, who broke into the country. They were forced to use tear gas against migrants, who threw stones at them.

Due to the current situation, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias asked to convene a special meeting of the EU Foreign Ministers. The meeting is scheduled for March 5 in Zagreb.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that 18,000 migrants crossed the border of Turkey - European Union after the Turkish authorities opened it.

As reported before, on February 29, Turkey opened the borders with the EU for migrants. Hundreds of people went to the border on foot.

Turkey decided to open the borders after the escalation of hostilities in the Syrian province of Idlib, where 33 Turkish soldiers died as a result of attacks by troops of Bashar al-Assad and the Russian Federation.
