Unification assembly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church shall take place on December 15. Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko said that at the Forum of Local Governance, broadcasted by the 112 Ukraine TV channel.
"I am glad to disclose the date of the Unification Assembly aimed to declare the creation of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. The Assembly shall be held on December 15, 2018 in St. Sophia’s Cathedral, which had been the center of the orthodox religious life of Ukraine for centuries. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople informed me that he had already signed the letters to the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kyiv Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Moscow Patriarchate inviting them to take part in this critically important historical event,” he noted.
On October 11, the Synodus lifted the anathema from Filaret, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyivan Patriarchate, and Makariy, Primate of Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Filaret stated that united Jubilee Bishops' Council would take place soon to create a unified Ukrainian local church.
In addition, the Ecumenical Patriarchate recognized Russia’s Orthodox Church annexation of Kyiv metropole in 1686.
As we reported earlier, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew signed an agreement on cooperation between Ukraine and the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey.
