‘British’ mutation of Covid-19 observed in Slovakia

In Slovakia, a case of infection with mutated coronavirus is observed. The mutation was earlier detected in the UK as Minister of Health of Slovakia Marek Krajčí reported on Facebook.

According to him, the experts from Bratislava Comenius University and Charles University found out the new strain in the samples taken in Michalovce area.

Krajčí reminded about the data of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) that shows that this strain has a 70% higher possibility for spread, more reproductive Rt (about 0.4) than the original virus.

Moreover, the Health Minister added that the Covid-19 mutation is mostly observed among people over the age of 60 and among children. The clinical signs and lethality of the disease have not changed in comparison with the original variant.

Earlier, Prime Minister of the UK Boris Johnson stated that a new coronavirus strain was identified in the UK.

The World Health Organization urged Europeans to strengthen approaches to control and prevent the spread of the virus due to the appearance of a new strain of coronavirus in some European countries.

As of today, a new strain of coronavirus has already been found in 33 countries. This strain is considered to be more contagious and is associated with a sharp increase in the number of infections in Britain.
