This year Black Friday falls on November 26th. But most of the big retailers have already started sales. Great deals are now available on gifts, toys, clothes, gadgets, travel and much more, and new ones appear every week.

Usually Black Friday discounts are the best we see in a year. However, sometimes the suggestions are not that great. We'll tell you what to do in order not to fall for the tricks of marketers, not to make impulsive purchases and really buy the desired product cheaper. In addition, discounts will not end on Black Friday, followed by Cyber Monday and New Year discounts. So:

Tricks for unnecessary purchases

Sales are limited in time, which creates a loss aversion. Like, the price of this sweater will never be so low. If you don't go shopping on Black Friday, you’ll miss the chance and everyone else will take it. Spoiler alert - there will be more sales ahead and you will have time to catch up.

One of the goals of Black Friday is that the customer should leave with those items in the basket that he did not plan to buy. There's even a name for this phenomenon - The Target Effect (named after a chain of large hypermarkets) - the result of a trip to the store when you planned to buy a few things, but end up buying a lot more.

Brands also offer free shipping for a certain amount of purchases, forcing you to add items to your cart that you weren't paying attention to.

During sales, price tags can be misleading. The crossed out price may simply be fictitious. Black Friday in Ukraine often does not correspond to the original idea of this day in the United States. Under the guise of "maximum discounts" are offered very poor ones.

Make a list and keep track of prices

The first rule of smart shopping on Black Friday is to buy what you need. To avoid buying unnecessary things, it is better to make a list of what you want to buy in advance:

  •     create a file with links to all the desired products;
  •     shop online to compare prices for one product in different stores;
  •     or if this is a separate online store - add the products you like to the virtual basket and expect the price to change in order to compare the scale of discounts and see if they are really profitable;
  •     use browser extensions CamelCamelCamel and Honey, which will show price history.
  •     make sure the promotions are indeed true, as many brands are raising prices the day before.

Explore the products in advance

The discount may look attractive, but you should also research the reviews of various brands in advance so as not to be surprised at their quality. Check out the most popular items this season so you know which items will be harder to get hold of. This way you can prioritize.

So, if you're looking for something that plays audio or video, it's worth checking out the specs and features you might need.

Subscribe to the newsletter

Follow your favorite stores on social media and subscribe to the newsletter to be the first to know about discounts.

Signing up for retailers' email newsletters is also important. Start paying attention to your pre-Black Friday newsletters. This is the easiest way to stay on top of Black Friday promotions - more efficient and accurate than a Google search.

Define your budget

Open source

There are tools shoppers can use to prevent impulse shopping. One strategy is to have a tight budget and know you won't spend more than that amount.

Withdraw cash, remove your Google Apple Pay card from your phone and watch, leave your card at home and you won't be able to buy more.

Also, don't go to shopping malls just for fun on Black Friday if you don't need to shop and that doesn't fit into your budget. When you find yourself there, you will definitely "need" some items and your check will exceed several thousand.

Avoid suspicious sites and Instagram stores

Avoid online stores and various social media pages that look suspicious. When you're dealing with confidential information, it's best to play it safe.

Read our return policy

Learn more about exchanging and returning items of your upcoming purchases. Check return terms (some retailers have extended periods during holidays). If you plan to shop online, find out if you can return the item to your regular store or if you need to return it by mail.

Don't forget about Cyber Monday

Black Friday is not the only promotion day. Certain items may drop even further on Cyber Monday, sellers will be offering site-wide discounts, so it is probably a good idea to wait.
