BBC Ukraine has published photos showing the extent of illegal deforestation in Transcarpathia. With the help of a drone, the authors of the video recorded "bald spots" in the mountains near the town of Mizhhiria, Obozrevatel reports.
“These photos were taken from a drone in Transcarpathia, near the city of Mizhhiria. In 2019, according to the State Agency of Forest Resources, the volume of illegal logging in Ukraine increased sevenfold. Thus, trees are cut down not only in the Carpathians but also in all wooded regions,” such a signature “accompanied” shocking photos.
Journalists also cited a statement by the State Agency of Forest Resources on young forest plantations.
"The agency says that new forests are being planted, so over the past five years, the total number of them in Ukraine has even increased slightly," the statement said.
Judging by the report, the photos of illegal logging were taken at the initiative of the Dronarium Ukraine community. The photographer's name is Tymofii Shmaida.
As we reported earlier, the British non-governmental organization Earthsight stated that IKEA company sold beech chairs made of the timber received from illegal logging of the forests in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
