During the seizure of a tanker off the coast of Nigeria, pirates kidnapped six Ukrainian sailors. Head of the Crisis Management Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Maxym Kovalenko said this in a commentary to RBC-Ukraine.
13 of the 19 crew members were kidnapped in a pirate attack on the Curacao Trader in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Nigeria (200 miles southwest), according to updated information.
"Among the captured sailors are six citizens of Ukraine. The embassies of Ukraine and UK in Nigeria have established contact with the ship owner, the operator of the vessel and are clarifying the circumstances of the case," Kovalenko said.
As we reported, pirates attacked a food tanker Curacao Trader in the Gulf of Guinea off the coast of Nigeria. The ship left the port of Lome (Togo) in a southerly direction. It speed dropped to 3 knots during the attack. Eight armed men approached the ship and boarded it. The vessel crew consisted of citizens of Russia and Ukraine.
In 2020, the number of kidnappings in the Gulf of Guinea increased by 20% compared to 2019.
