This variant of Covid-19 was detected through genome sequencing in 10 countries including Denmark, the U.S. and Australia. According to the researchers, only in the UK, 32 cases of infection are observed.
It is noted that the earliest cases are dated to December and occurred in the UK and Nigeria. According to the scientists, this new variant has similarities with British mutation B.1.1.7.
The scientists are concerned that B1525 has a ‘potentially disturbing number of mutations’, including the E484K mutation to the spike protein that makes the virus more resistant to antibodies.
“We don’t yet know how well this [new] variant will spread, but if it is successful it can be presumed that immunity from any vaccine or previous infection will be blunted,” associate professor of cellular microbiology at the University of Reading Dr Simon Clarke said.
As we reported, the WHO mission found out that the coronavirus (Covid-19) appeared in Wuhan before December 2019; by then, it already circulated in that area.
Besides, the WHO believes the coronavirus may have spread from bats.
