In the Leninsky district of Crimea, due to the illegal extraction of sand, the ancient town of Artesian is being destroyed. On this Saturday, May 6, the pro-Russian website Kryminform reported it with reference to the East Crimean Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve.
"To the northwest of the fortification and the necropolis of Artesian there is a spontaneous illegal predatory extraction of sand from illegal quarries in the territories of the Leninsky district, stripping works with deep drilling in the territory where several Kurgan groups are located (with mounds up to 2 m in height), an ancient road, Hellenistic settlement and a soil necropolis, "- said in a statement.
The head of the Artesian archaeological expedition, Doctor of Historical Sciences Nikolai Vinokurov asserts that in the dump of the cultural layer there are slabs of ancient tombs, bottles and fragments of antique ceramics of the first centuries of our era.
"The unique monument of archeology, the ancient settlement and the necropolis of Artesian, which had been on state records since Soviet times, suffered serious damage, which would be assessed by specialists. But the main thing is not even this, but the works are continuing today, given the density of monuments location on the territory of the Leninsky District, the list of losses is likely to continue, "- said in the message of the museum-reserve.
