Aggressive measles virus genotype B3 spotted in Odesa region

Unlike the other regions of Ukraine, an aggressive measles virus genotype B3 is circulating In Odesa region. This genotype of the virus causes complications and high level of spreading, as the press service of Odesa City Council informs.

It is noted that the National laboratory of Ukraine found thus type of the virus only in Odesa region. In the other regions, genotype D8 is circulating.

Measles virus genotype B3 is characterized by high pathogenicity and virulence. It is also highly infectious and lethal, as the research conducted in Copenhagen confirms.

Previously Odesa received 3,000 vaccines from measles, but the region needs another 9,000.

As it was reported earlier, 3,554 people were infected with measles in Ukraine since the beginning of 2018.

During the last week, the majority of the diseased are spotted in Ivano-Frankivsk, Odesa, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi, Lviv regions. There is no region in Ukraine where the virus wasn’t spotted.
