“First of all, our psychologists work with preschool age and pupils. Special rehabilitation programs on adaptation and reintegration of children in social life currently work at schools of Eastern and Central regions of Ukraine. Within six months of the program functioning over 11 thousand children were assisted,” claimed Minister.
UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine joined their forces together and created program "Improving the psychosocial response to children and families in eastern and central regions of Ukraine", which works more than half a year already. The purpose of this program is traumatic stress recovery.
According to UNICEF, 20% of children from the East and Center Ukraine perceived explosions, 20% witnessed the manslaughter; one in ten children saw the dead bodies of the military. As noted by professor of Psychology of the National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy" and UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) expert Sergiy Bogdanov, the most urgent task was to reduce the intensity of traumatic stress and gradual social adaptation mode setting.
More than 23 thousand families and children who were affected during Euromaidan or came from ATO area applied to Ukrainian methodical center of practical psychology and social work, according to the director of the center.
“We plan to create an additional program for the rehabilitation of the military. Unfortunately, our local psychologists have no experience with overcoming the post-traumatic stress disorder. So we are now intensively preparing professionals to be ready to help the soldiers after the war ends,” said the President of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy Anriy Meleshevych.
