15,000 Ukrainians sickened with measles in January

More than 15,000 Ukrainians got sick with measles since the beginning of the year as the Healthcare Ministry of Ukraine reported on Facebook.

It is noted that 3,379 Ukrainians sickened over the last week.

The majority of the cases were spotted in Lviv, Vinnytsia, Rivne, Khmelnytsky regions and Kyiv.

“The vaccination is the only reliable protection from measles and its severe complications (pneumonia, ear infection and encephalitis), all the more if the measles breakout is spotted in your region,” the Healthcare Ministry emphasized.

The parents are urged to vaccinate the children according to the schedule of the vaccinations.

Earlier, the outbreak of measles was spotted among the personnel of the National Guard of Ukraine, assigned to Vinnytsia military unit. The first case of the sickness of measles was spotted before the New Year and now, the number of the diseased increased be several dozens. The National Guard does not have a specialized medical unit so the soldiers are hospitalized to the city hospital. Four soldiers receive the treatment at Khmelnytsky District Hospital. 

Moreover, five people died from measles in Ukraine in 2019.
