Eduard Katz, the owner of Plirofories AG company (Switzerland) stated that he would leave the media business in Ukraine and sell 112 Ukraine TV channel.
The reasons for his decision, he said, were the complex issues with protection of freedom of speech in Ukraine; the preclusion of TV channel's activity by the Ukrainian parliament and the National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting; and the excessive political nature of the information market in Ukraine, which endangers living up to the journalism standards in the channel's everyday activities.
'Despite the increased level of competition and the pressure by some Ukrainian politicians, the TV channel managed not only to remain the leader of the information broadcasting but also to develop the network of news bureaus and to increase its technical capacities, to launch a number of full-fledged political and social projects. Unfortunately, the current political reality prevents the TV channel from full-fledged development of the TV channel'.
'We repeatedly turned to the Ukrainian and the European politicians and sent letters to the international organizations for the rights of reporters; we met with the leaders of top American and European TV channels. We asked to protect the TV channel and demanded not to allow the shrinking of the freedom of speech in Ukraine. However, the lack of guarantees that the situation the protection of freedom of speech in Ukraine will improve led to my decision to leave the media business in Ukraine,' Eduard Katz said in his statement on the issue.
