U.S. Senate votes for lifting sanctions against Russian oligarch Deripaska

Democrats did not manage to keep sanctions against the companies of the Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska in force, as The New York Times reported.

“Eleven Republicans joined Democrats in a vote to enforce sanctions against the corporate empire of an influential ally of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, but the effort fell three votes short of the 60-vote threshold required to advance the measure. The vote was 57-42, with one Democratic senator not voting,” the message says.

According to the plan of the Trump’s Administration on lifting up the restrictions, sanctions against several Deripaska’s companies will be lifted. “Rusal”, “EvroSibEnergo” and En+.

The decision will come into force if it will not be blocked by the U.S. Congress within 30 days.

Personal sanctions against Deripaska, which took effect in April 2018, remain in force and will not be affected by the decision of the Finance Ministry.
