Ukraine might be trying to blackmail the Western countries, claiming it considers restoration of the nuclear status. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of Russian Foreign Ministry said so on April 29, as quoted by Izvestia.
"I believe one should not take seriously the statements of Ukrainian representative in Germany - the ones about the possibility for Kyiv to create nuclear weapons; it is already disavowed by Ukraine's Foreign Ministry. That's their public diplomacy and rhetorics", Zakharova said.
According to her, Russian Foreign Ministry considers that statement "a foolish attempt to blackmail the Western countries with Kyiv's mythical weapons in order to get preferences in relations with NATO".
Earlier, Ukraine's Ambassador in Germany Andriy Melnyk claimed that Kyiv might consider nuclear status to be able to protect itself from Russia - if NATO doesn't accept Ukraine as a full-fledged member.
The statement followed after Ukraine's Defense Minister Andriy Taran said that Russian army's contingent near the border with Ukraine would grow to 110,000 servicemen.
