Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said there were no alternatives to the Minsk agreements, and the Steinmeier formula was a compromise solution for peace in the Donbas. Lavrov said this during an interview, Interfax reports.

“There can be no "Plan B". Minsk agreements are the basis, on which everything should be built. To be specific, the Steinmeier formula is already a compromise compared to the original text of the Minsk agreements approved by the UN Security Council. The first version of the text provided next steps: the law on special status, enshrining of it in the Constitution, and after that – the holding of an election", - said the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

He recalled that when negotiations were held in the Norman format in previous years, ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko opposed the consistent granting of special status to the Donbas and the conducting of elections because he did not know who people would vote for. Therefore, Steinmeier suggested his plan to solve the problem, now known as the Steinmeier formula, and in its implementation, there is no derogation from the basic principles of the Minsk agreements.

Lavrov noted that this included amnesty, a special status enshrined in the Constitution, a dilution of forces, full restoration of economic connections, and dismissal of the blockade.
