There could be Russian citizens involved in the ongoing military campaign in Syria; however, they have nothing to do with the regular Russian army. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian leader Vladimir Putin said this as quoted by TASS information agency.
This was Peskov’s response to Reuters’ findings about the actual combat casualties in Syria in 2017, which strongly differ from the official data provided by the Russian defense ministry.
‘If there are any Russian citizens in Syria who act as volunteers and so on… it has nothing to do with the government, and the Defense ministry is not involved in this in any way,’ he said.
The Kremlin spokesman urged the audience to pay attention to official data of the Defense Ministry, when it comes to combat losses in the Syrian campaign.
As 112 International reported earlier, Reuters provided their own calculations, based on reports from families and friends of the deceased Russian citizens who participated in the Syrian conflict. Accordign to the data, the Russian government deliberately lowers the figures.
