In 2017, Cozy Bear hacker group that boasts ties with the Russian foreign intelligence conducted an attack on the server of the Police Academy in the Netherlands. The incident occurred during the investigation of the MH17 disaster, de Volkskrant reports, citing its own sources.

AVID, the Dutch special service detected the breach. They informed the law enforcers who at that moment looked into the case of the downing of the civilian airplane over the occupied territory of Donbas.

The outlet's sources claim that it remains unknown whether any documents were stolen during this breach. However, security agencies and police authorities did not comment on the incident.

"There were a lot of question marks. How long did they stay in the system? Was it the first time? Did they collect any data earlier? It was not clear", one of the sources said.

The hearings in the case of the downing of flight MH17 began in the Netherlands on June 7. They are supposed to last until June 25. Among the key topics would be the actual weapon used in the attack, the site of missile launch, and the part of the four defendants in this case.
