Captain of Russian military intelligence Yevgeniy Yerofeev, who was exchanged for Ukrainian fighter pilot Nadiya Savchenko in May 2015, is alive and undergoes treatment; any information about his death is a fake. Oksana Sokolovskaya, his lawyer who protected him in the Ukrainian court said this in her interview with Vesti newspaper.
‘He’s been fine, he’s alright, just treating his hand; he has no issues. I just asked him to post a new photo of himself, but these guys don’t want to be in the public eye. Those who said he was dead probably wanted to draw some extra attention,’ she said.
In late May 2016, some media reported Yerofeev had been shot dead in front of his apartment in Moscow region. Viktor Ageev, another regular serviceman of the Russian army, also said so in his interview with Novaya Gazeta newspaper.
In May 2016, President Petro Poroshenko pardoned servicemen of Russian military intelligence Yevgeniy Yerofeev and Aleksandr Aleksandrov. They had been arrested while fighting against Ukrainian troops in Luhansk region in May 2015. The Ukrainian government offered Russia to exchange the two detained troopers for Nadiya Savchenko, whom Russia-backed militants detained in June 2014. After several rounds of negotiations, the Russian leadership agreed; Savchenko returned to Kyiv, and on the same day, Yerofeev and Aleksandrov landed in Moscow.
