Russia intends to allow citizens of the so-called Donetsk People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic to get citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simpler way, as Kommersant reports.
According to the report, everything is ready for that, only the order of Russian President Vladimir Putin is needed, which grants people citizenship. Such an order can appear straight away after the presidential elections in Ukraine.
Head of the committee on Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov confirmed the information and added that the order would be signed, “if only the new political situation would not make us paying attention how new Ukrainian president would deal with the conflict situation on Eastern Ukraine”.
According to the new amendments, which were added by the State Duma of the Russian Federation, to the federal law on Citizenship of the Russian Federation, Putin has the right to determine the categories of foreigners who can receive Russian citizenship through a simplified procedure. One of the articles of the law 29 was amended: "The President of the Russian Federation has the right to determine the categories of foreign citizens and stateless persons who have the right to apply for the citizenship of the Russian Federation in a simplified procedure for humanitarian purposes, as well as the procedure for submitting those applications, and the list of documents”.
