A bill on the simplification of procedure for obtaining of Russian citizenship might be submitted to the State Duma this month, as Kommersant reported citing the representatives of the task group on the implementation of the state migration policy concept.
“We want to solve this issue during the spring session to enable everyone who wishes to become citizens of Russia. And consequently, what will Russia do? It will protect its citizens,” Petr Tolstoy, the Vice-Speaker of Lower Chamber, said.
The Russian government prepares amendment of the law "On citizenship of the Russian Federation," according to which, it will be possible to obtain Russian citizenship without refusal from the current one. The issue is about recognition of one of the points of Article 13 of this law as repealed. According to it, one of the conditions for obtaining citizenship by foreign citizens is the refusal of the current citizenship.
Head of State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Connections with Countrymen Leonid Kalashnikov reported that Article 13 of the citizenship law might be amended in other ways: the abolition of the requirement of continuous residence in the territory of Russia by foreigner-applicant for Russian citizenship during five years and point on the necessity to confirm the legal source of funds for living.
“It is dictated by the fact that we are interested in the increase in the number of citizens of Russia. First of all, through countrymen. It will allow us to pasportize diaspora living abroad. They want to get Russian citizenship but cannot as they have to refuse from their current citizenship. Millions of Russians live abroad and would like to become the citizens of Russia,” MP Konstantin Zatulin said.
The bill might be submitted to State Duma this month.
Group on implementation of state migration policy concept assumes efforts to attract to the country more new citizens from five up to ten million.
Besides, 229,422 Ukrainians received Russian citizenship last year.
