Moscow may halt its membership in the European Court of Human Rights, and reduce its funds to the Council of Europe, Russian media Izvestia was told by a source in the Russian Parliament.

If the right to vote for the ECHR judges isn’t returned to the country, they are planning to reduce the payment by $7-10 million.

“The CoE must cancel all the discriminative demands, especially the bans concerning Russia that exist in the ECHR. Otherwise, I don’t see the point of continuing to work in this judicial body,” the source said.

Deputy Head of Russian Federation Council on International Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov confirmed the intentions. He noted that the “tendentious attitude” towards Russia continues, the payments will be halted. He also reminded that up until the mid-90s Russia wasn’t a part of the ECHR and “lived just fine”.
