Russia commenced large-scale shooting exercises on firing ranges next to the border with Ukraine. Interfax news agency reported that on January 11. 

Some 3,000 men and 300 vehicles are involved, including T-72 main battle tanks, BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, as well as standard small arms.

Servicemen of two motorized rifle divisions in Belgorod and Smolensk oblasts will run the tactical maneuvers, working on "combat teamwork between various units" and "new methods and tactics of completion of combat tasks in the complicated backgrond of modern combat", the message says. "Each unit will complete the maneuvers with the training battle with the stage of live shooting, during which the crews of armored vehicles BMP-2 and tanks T-72B3 show the skills of joint action and hit targets that simulate vehicles and manpower of the enemy at ranges up to 1.2 thousand meters".

Earlier, Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said that the United States will continue to prepare a response to a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, as all steps taken by Russia indicate such intentions, the press service of the American mission said.

"I wish that it is true that they have no plans [to invade Ukraine]. But everything we’ve seen so far indicate that they are making motions in that direction," Thomas-Greenfield stated.
