Russia’s delegation in the UN Security Council blocked the American draft resolution, which implies the extension of the joint mission of the UN and OPCW (the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), as it looks into cases of chemical weapons use in Syria.

According to Deutsche Welle, Russia vetoed the draft resolution submitted for voting on November 16.

The UN states that numerous cases of chemical weapons use have been reported since the beginning of the conflict in Syria. In 2016 alone, 161 cases were documented; almost 1,500 lost their lives and nearly 15,000 suffered intoxication of various degrees of severity.

Russia previously vetoed similar draft document.
